    Hi Dr Thornton,
Im a Jamaican RN living in the Cayman Islands. Just finished watching your very inspirational movie and was curious to read up some more about your family. I’m glad I did.
My personal mantra throughout a rough childhood has been ” The best revenge is sucess” taken from Les Brown, and that has helped me tremendously to be the success I am today, and I can only aspire for greater things and your movie will help be do just that.
    Thanks for sharing!!

    Hello Dr. Thornton,

My name is C. E., I’m a Blk. Male late 40’s,and married to An E.R. M.D. for the last 25yrs. We watch your life story yesterday on BETV. My wife and I just couldn’t hold back the tears as we watch the storyline unfold. Please keep in mind that it wasn’t because we were ” SAD” but full of pride to learn of your family struggles to fulfilled the dreams of our ancestors. You story mirrors our is so many ways but, without a father to push us, and in my case, a mother who was kept for getting descent education . She was only told to keep working as sharecroppers in the fields of Eastern N.C. We were always told by our parents ,“I f you put our noses to the grindstone, work hard , stay away from bad influences’ of drugs or jails, then our futures will be bright“ and nothing will keep us from enjoying THE AMERCIAN DREAM!. Our families are very proud of our achievements’ and like the fact that we have been married so long, but each day we still understand very well just what it took for US to reach this stage in ours lives, and do everything to teach our kids about “them olden days” as they call it.

At this stage of our lives, we still fear we can lose it all in an blink of an eye with the current healthcare crisis. The hospital where she worked for 16yrs. closed and laid off everyone. This meant M.D’ D.O.’s, L.PN’S, R.N.’ admin. staffers lost their jobs. So for almost 2 months we flew around the country talking to headhunters and admin. C.E.O’S & M.D. heads of E.R’s. in her search for a new position. This was such an utter stress and shock to my wife that she just wanted to retired and go and work for a lg. drug rep. co. Lucky for her ,she found a position w/ a level 2 trauma center, all though in a place less desirable then the place she just left. The people here just pile into the E.R. 24hrs a day, 7 days a wk., because they have no other place to receive healthcare. the reg. Docs. and R.N.P.’S wont see them in a private setting because the state and fed. Programs wont reimburse them. Needless to state she ,comes home in foul mood most days. She works all 3 shifts, and gets very little sleep. At this point and time I hear her shout out “I wish that she never went into med.” and” why is the government tiring to practice med.” I often wish I had the answer for her. I’m an professional chef of 32yrs. and had to start over again in this new town (things are very slow in this economy for me to startup a upscale restaurant in this town) but I’m going to try and make a go of it, if only on a very sm. scale . If you could please give me a little advice on were should people like us go from here? Will there be a future for our kids in the med. field? Will the future taxes be too much of a burden on us to try and do it better for a dissent future ahead? Please write back soon.

Yours in the Lord Jesus Christ,

    Exec. Chef C.E.M.

PS/ PLEASE EDIT AS YOU SEE FIT …

I love to watch inspirational movies, and this one was emotionally satisfying. Congrats on your biography on becomming a movie, to share with ppl like me. I have to say…I cried twice!! But it was a good cry during the film. I’m a 27 year old black female & single mom workin’ as a pastry cook right now(in a place i’m not to fond of, to be in an enviornment where ppl think it’s ok to treat you like a “subject”, but the money is why I stay), and currently I’m in school to become a psychiatric nurse…I kinda wish I had somone to push me like that when I was younger…And I love the fact, this was a well made black movie…the story just carried strong with the emotions all the way through…this is definitely by favorite movie. It has actually gave me the motivation to become something great. And to never except the word “No”. And for it to be a story based to true events…gosh..we really need more of this!!! Thank you for sharing your story….many lives have been touched.
